If you knowingly falsify an insurance application and collect on a claim you maybe charged with insurance fraud, Insurance fraud is a felony. Being charged and convicted does not happen often but the insurance companies are getting wise to these type of practices and are raising the rates for all classes of boats to cover for these type of claims. That will mean that the people with the boats that do less than 65, and there are a lot of them here, will pay more in premiums to make up for the insured that claims his 75 to 80 MPH boat only does 60 to 65 MPH.

It's not hard for the underwriters to look up the type of boat you have and find out what the potential speed is with stock power. Be careful who you try to pull the wool over. The insurance companies are pressing this issue more and more and it won't be long before we read about a member here who spends a fortune to defend themselves from an insurance company looking to make an example out of a claimant. The claimant could still end up losing the claim to replace their $100K or more boat. Do't be a penny wise and a dollar foolish.

I hate to cast a cloud over what may appear like an innocent mistake or omission but this is the reality.

Progressive will not write any boats greater than 30 ft or greater than 100K in any coastal state from Texas to North Carolina. Call Ken at Elton Porter and tell him Derek told you to call. He can get you excellent coverage @ a far price in a preferred program for a Scarrab with twin 500's if you are over 35 yrs old and have a clean driving record.

Hey Tom (boatman22) - small world...the person you're replying to (jhardee - Jason Hardee) is Michael's business partner. Figured you probably didn't even know. We all ate dinner together at Johnny Finns two Labor Days ago.

Jason - who'd you end up getting insurance through and if you don't mind, what was the rate? I'm paying about $2k a year for my 30 through American Modern Home.

Progressive has stopped writing this boat in Texas and other coastal states in the Gulf & Atlantic as of January of 2006 or so. Thus its likely you had it insured with them prior to that.

Keep it their

You are correct on Progressive not writing policies in coastal states. They will not insure boats with bigger than 496 mags and will not write boats over 30 ft. Existing policies are grandfathered for now.
