Great Question. It really depends on the carrier. The carriers for the performance markets require a survey for liability only coverage if the boat is 10 years and old (for most). The only carrier I know of in the performance boat insurance arena that doesn't require a survey for a boat over 10 years old is Lloyd's, all the others like Markel, American Modern etc, will require it if they even offer a liability only policy.
Hope this helps.

Do you do liabiltiy only coverage and do you go through any carriers that dont require a survey? The carriers that require a survey do they require a total survey or just a hull survey?

Get the survey (one time deal) and go with the cheaper carrier. It will save you a lot of money over time.
If you want, you can call me to discuss your options and get an estimate of what the liability only would cost you.
