Insurance - Fountain 38EC

Early next year I'm going to be on the hunt for a used Fountain 38EC. (Stepping up from a 25 foot cruiser.) I'm curious what I can expect insurance to run on this boat. Obviously cost of the boat would factor into annual insurance cost (I'm projecting $130-200K), but I'm curious if insurance rates are also based on top speed speeds? Two stock engine options for the 38EC; 496 or 500HP, 60 versus 70mph. I don't particularly care too much about this minor speed difference, but the the larger engine option make much difference in the insurance rates?

While speed is a factor with boat insurance it is not as big an issue for express cruisers, run-abouts, blow boats etc. as it is for HP boats.

Predicting a rate for insurance is difficult now, since the insurance companies are using so many different factors for rating the risks. Right now I have a company that would want a stupid amount to insure this boat, >$4000 and then on the other hand I also have companies that are giving rates away for EC's. I quoted a Formula 370SS today at $125k and the rate came in right at $1000/yr.

Hope this helps with your research.

Thanks!
Adam

Hey Ralph,

As I mentioned to you earlier today, age and value is going to make the biggest impact when getting insurance on a cruiser. Good rule of thumb for the State of NC is to take your purchase price and multiply it by .015. Keep in mind that your rate for a cruiser is going to be a little bit higher because you are in a coastal state. Any other inland state and the rate would be less than the1.15%. Anyways, that number will give you a good approximation or ball park.

Good luck in your search!
