Florida Insurance
Just moved to Mississippi from Virginia. My plan is to keep my boat in Pensacola dry storage. At the same time I need to start a new insurance policy. Can anyone tell me what I should expect to pay to insure my boat in Florida? I'm being told outrageous premiums due to it's "Florida" and you can boat all year. I have lived in Pensacola and it gets too cold to boat during the winter. My annual premium was only $550 when I lived in Virginia Beach and there are people who boat there all year! Would it be any cheaper to keep my boat in say Orange Beach, Alabama or Gulfport, MS due to it not being "Florida"? Thanks for any input.

It's true. Simply because it's FL (and the reasons/excuses vary widely), your rates will be much higher than elsewhere (especially the NE).
Stacy was kind enough to do a sample comparison a little while ago. Check this out:

As I mentioned to you through email. If you split storage between FL and (MS or AL) it will be cheaper for you due to the fact that there are more available carriers for you.
It becomes more expensive than full time MS/AL storage or even split storage when you become a full time FL risk. FL is looked at as a state that just has high loss ratios and the market of available carriers is minimal. When you combine the two (high risk + low supply) you get high rates.
Your age will also be a factor in your rates. As I mentioned to you we're working on sending you split mooring quotes. Those should be done and emailed to you today. Talk to you then.

Yeah, VA is a much easier state to insure in! We'll make sure you get taken care of. At least you have the understanding that it will cost more for FL based. Coming to terms with that is the biggest hurdle! haha

Picked up a policy with AMIG through Bradley Insurance in Florida. Great rate for the amount of coverage I recieved. Thanks again Stacy for the info you provided. There are limited options when insuring a boat in Florida!
