Joker Powerboats/CRC heads to World Championships
Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 heads to Palm Beach World Championships with high hopes.
The Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 team heads south this week for the Offshore Powerboat Association’s season ending Palm Beach World Championships in Jupiter, Florida. The two race competition is the final event of the Amsoil Offshore Powerboat Racing Series for 2012.
The races will be held on Friday, October 19th and Sunday, October 21st in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida shoreline. There will be testing on Thursday and Saturday. The class champions will be determined by combining the points earned in each of the races.
The team is excited about competing for the OPA World Championship. “This season has had its ups and downs”, reported team driver, Pete Smith. “We missed three races due to damage to the boat received in the first event, so we never had a shot at the national championship. Now it is a winner take all race for the World Championship trophy.” Team Throttleman Rich Smith added, “As far as the races we entered, the season was a success. A win and a third place, but it was tough missing the three races while the boat was being repaired. We are looking forward to racing for the World Championship trophy.”
The Joker Powerboats/CRC 611 team has their work cut out for them. Class 6 is one of the most competitive classes in OPA racing and winning is going to be no easy task. “Every boat that hits the water has a chance at winning,” said Bud Wilson, the team’s Crew Chief and engine builder. “The Class 6 field has numbered from 7 to 10 boats in each race, so winning the OPA World Championship is truly an accomplishment.”
The team, a family operation made up of brothers Pete and Rich Smith along with friends and family members, is no stranger to winning in their 6 years of racing with the OPA. They were the 2009 National Champions in Class 6. Their sponsors include Joker Powerboats, CRC Industries, Marren Fuel Injection and Optima Batteries.
