Abandoned boat/ mechanics lein???

Has anyone had experience placing a mechanics lein or obtaining a title for a boat through abandoned boat title? I have one that I agreed to purchase from a friend, He purchased at an auction 10+ yrs ago, never titled to avoid taxes? I purchased 2 yrs ago started to work and now its ready for paint, however after several dozen attempts with him to get title, still none. Lost paperwork or something, so what to do. Help! Do I just scratch, it wasnt too much $ and I only have 5-6k invested now.But that was the point low $ toy
since time is limited I wanted something paid for so I wasnt sitting there while I made payments.

If your friend had titled it you could just send him a registered letter requesting the title. If he didn't respond in a certain amount of time, time would be set by whatever state your in, it would be handled as a lost title and a new one issued. I know this doesn't realy help. You need atleast the name of the last known registered owner and you could do the same proceedure.

Unfortunately, I do not know that info. Should I contact Maryland DNR? Why do I have a liking for old boats?

This may be of some help;

Good luck,

Another option would be to find an old title that is close to your boat and go from there.
