THE 3rd ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT RACES

Vera’s Beach Club
July 12,2014

The Challenge
To design and build a human-powered corrugated cardboard boat capable of racing approximately a 200 yard course in St. Leonard’s Creek, at Vera’s Beach Club. All boats are to be built prior to the day of the race. Boats may be powered by canoe paddles, kayak paddles, oars or muscle power.
The Rules

1. The entire boat hull and seating must be made of corrugated cardboard. Any thickness of corrugated cardboard is permissible. Corrugated cardboard bonded to other substances like vinyl, or coated with wax etc. may not be used. Plastic corrugated material, fiberboard tubes, angle board, etc. may not be used in the hull and seat construction. Any materials may be used in the superstructure such as a mast or decoration as long as they do not aid in its flotation.

2. Tape (duct tape, cellophane tape or any kind of tape), glue, latex caulk, and latex paint can be used. Tape cannot extend past 4 inches of a seam or joint and may not wrap entire boat.

3. Paper towels and newspaper are permissible.

4. The hull cannot be wrapped in plastic or any other material not listed as permissible.

5. Boats must be easy to exit should they become a sinking ship, and they should be free of sharp edges and other dangers to the crew.

6. Boats will be inspected for rule compliance prior to the race. All boats must be registered and on the beach, ready for inspection by 3:30.

7. All crew must wear life jackets.

8. All entrants must remove their boat and any remnants of it, after the race.

9. ALL participants must sign a “Hold Harmless” release prior to the race.

10. The race will start in the water with the crew in the boat. Only one person may steady a single crew boat, and only two people may steady a multi-crew boat. No pushing off.

11. Judges reserve the right to divide entrants into heats if there are a large number of boats. Total elapsed time will determine the winner.

12. Boats that are deemed non-compliant with the event rules will be allowed to race as long as they are not hazardous to the crew and others. They will not be eligible for “timed race” awards.

13. The entry fee is $25.00 per boat.

14. Prizes will be awarded for fastest single person boat, fastest multi-person boat and most creative “theme” boat.
