i made the trip last month for the air&water show,i got a slip at 31st harbor.the illinois river is no wake from brandon rd lock until you get in the chicago ship canal.i would plan 6 hrs minimum but probibally longer depending on barge traffic and lockage time.it took me 10.5 hrs to get there and 8 hrs to get back, but in non no wake areas my cruiser only travels at 9 mph.

I would trailer... I have never done it. But what have been til if ya don't have a cruser it's a long ride home. Had a friend butcher a prop and have to get towed back.....in a storm. That story killed any idea I would ever have of making the trip without adquite boat

I am pretty sure you can lock through 24-7-365. Always a good idea to get the phone numbers for the locks you are planning on using and call ahead to check if they are busy with barges.
