Im willing to bet that boat would handle a whole lot better with a 2" shortie. That drive looks really deep, and with a 525 in a boat that light, you should be able to spin a 28 pitch prop... probably a Merc lab 28. The shorter drive will require less trim, and also reduce outdrive drag.

As for tabs... you will probably need something like these:

Great looking boat!

Nice boat. It should fly when you get your handling issues sorted out. Im with Chris on your XD. You should see a big improvement in handling with a 2" shortie. It will also take some custom prop work.
You do have room for tabs but it's going to be tight.
I changed mine out from the stock Bennetts to billet Eddie Marine single rams. My transom is tight too. I moved mine out towards the chines. I had to machine the transom mounting plate to clear the swim platform supports on the corners of the transom. These are 12" X 17"s and should work well on your boat. www.eddiemarine.com I think they're model #500s.
Here's a few pics.

Steve

Well your gonna love this, i had a 7.4 mpi in it before I hit a rock with it when I got it destroyed the out drive so i upgraded to the imco lower, I was pretty happy with it. Imco told me that the shorter unit would not work for my application so I had to go with the standerd lenght. The problem I had was with the out drive all the way up towing the damn out drive would nail everything on the point so when i got the 525 setup I just sold the imco lower I had I figured the xr drive would be ok for what I was doin..

Your boat looks very similar to this:

or this:

I still think a shortie would make it handle better.
Why did IMCO say it wouldn't work?
