Demolition Derby: First World Championship Race Hard On The Equipment

Race day one of the OSS portion of the Destin World Championships had the weather gods smiling: 71 degrees, and a bright sun shining on a race course with 1 – 2 feet waves. Perfect conditions for a fast race. First boats to hit the water were the OSSCO Cat Outboards and the OSSVL single engine vee-bottoms. OSSCO fielded 5 boats; OSSVL had 8 boats competing for round one of the World Championship.

OSSCO started like most of the season races, with MOJO in the lead, with Bermuda Berrycuda after them. But that quickly changed, and it was Mapei in the lead with Hog’s Breath behind them, and Mojo third. And this is how their race finished.

In OSSVL, it was a battle of the Yankees. Typhoon was first after the green flag went up, but the Kostelac brothers got them before turn one. Then, it was a duel, with both boats pulling away from the field. But the attrition gods intervened hard: Kevin Cooper in Laveycraft spun out in turn 5, but got back in the race. Shortly thereafter, Team Typhoon lost their steering wheel and were out of the game. WHM Mini Me shortly followed in the demolition derby, and Team Laveycraft went upside down in the last lap, Hometown Mortgage did not race the last lap. The podium finishes went to the only boats left on the course: The winners were the Kostelacs in Wild Ride, Team IMCO was second, Liquid Assets were third.

The second race had the OSSCL Cat Lites and the OSSV dual engine vee bottoms in the water.

In OSSCL, Motley and Popeye’s took the lead after the green flag went up. But Speed Racer took away the leading position, with Motley behind, besides, and all over them. Reliable followed. Hooters broke down, but got back in the race. Speed Racer won, Motley Crew took second, Reliable Carriers third.

In OSSV, the Bad Boy boat with the Krazy Kubans on the helm led. Then they continued their 2006 record of breaking every boat they could lay their hands on. They limped on on one engine. Miccosukee followed soon and broke, but they continued. The new “laps raced” rule definitely provided incentive to finish at all costs. The lead went to Love Muscle, opening a bigger and bigger lead over Fury. And then the Muscle went limp and broke down. Fury came in first, with Miccosukee second, and Bad Boys crawled in on one engine in third place.

Just getting the news that the wreckers are out to clear all the broken down boats before the Cat Race. Eric Cormier in Mini Me requested to stay by the turn boat to watch the race. Request denied by Race Control.

Re: Demolition Derby: First World Championship Race Hard On The Equipment

The last race was between the big cats of OSSC and the fast cats in the OSSCX and OSSTX classes.

In OSSCX, CRC and Bud Select sprinted ahead side by side. CRC took the lead, Bud fell back, then snuck back up on CRC. And again, the attrition gods got their hands in the game and handed Budweiser Select mechanical problems that made them fall back. Cintron also developed technical trouble, giving CRC an easy, but well deserved win.

In OSSC, CMS got the early jump, with most of the field deck-to-deck behind them. Then Reliable Carrier’s took the lead, with WHM and Nichols behind them. Bob Bull’s CMS joined the ranks of busted boats. Reliable, Nichols, WHM, JD Byrider – that was the sequence for most of the race. But in lap 12, the attrition gods touched Reliable Carriers, which fell way back, handing the lead to Nichols, with JD Byrider second. The winner in OSSC was Nichols Offshore, second was JD Byrider, WHM third. After the race, the referees awarded JD Byrider with a one minute penalty for coming in under weight, which placed the team into 3rd place, and WHM into second. This decision was later overturned by the Chief Referee, and the results were back to Nichols Offshore first, JD Byrider second, WHM third.

The AMF/Mr. Geico Turbine boat broke like so many of this race. So did Warpaint. The waters in Destin were deceiving. They looked mild, but they got very nast, munching boats alive.
