Usually, a boat race is not an obstacle course. The OSS Season Opener in Biloxi on March 25 was one.
Biloxi had been totally wiped out in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, the costliest storm in the Nation’s history - 1,836 dead, $81.2 billion in damage. The City of Biloxi alone had to remove 2.8 million cubic yards of debris, enough to cover a football field and stand more than 132 stories high. To put the devastation in perspective, the debris of the World Trade Center was estimated at less than half. The effects of the storm had forced the city of Biloxi to skip the race in 2006.
Biloxi rebounded. The city insisted on having the first OSS race of the season - as usual. Which created another obstacle: Many OSS teams from the North-East literally had to dig their boats out from under feet of snow before they could truck their boats down South for the March 25th race.
