Reunion / Real Offshore Race News

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HORBA was asked to be part of a presentation for a new race, to be sponsored by the city of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida yesterday, in conjunction with OSS. The proposal was for a new race weekend in June to be added to the schedule of OSS ....with a twist !!!

Since the area of Sunny Isles was so important in the history of the sport of offshore racing, a real offshore ocean race will be held on the Friday of that June weekend...June 20 - 22, 2008.

The race will go from Sunny Isles out to the cement ship at Bimini and back....with a little dogleg added to make it a 100 mile race. HORBA will be sanctioning the race...not OSS.

The race is for production type boats and old historic race boats. The final rules as far as classes won't be decided for a few weeks, but the main idea is to get real ocean racing back on the board and open it up to production type boats like the old days...WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SAFETY!!!!

So dig out your old race boat, you have 5 months to get it ready to go.

Also on the Friday night we will hold the reunion of the old racers. A discussion period seminar will be held and taped with the old racers telling the true stories finally.

Saturday the racers will be available for an hour or so midday to sign a special poster for the event and meet the fans.

Saturday from noon to 4PM a special Concours d'sport will be held for the judging of old race boats and old race cars (We are working with the people that did the same thing for Porsche last november at Daytona) so there may be Porsche race cars too.

Saturday evening, awards for the Concours winners and ocean race winners and induction for many of the old racers into the new HORBA Hall of Fame.

Stay tuned !!!!!

This is still being tossed around, but it MAY, emphasis MAY look something like this.

Five classes. In two groups
Historic ...2 classes Open and Production
Modern...3 classes. S / T / U
Minimum boat length 20 feet
Maximum boat length 55 feet.

Historic would be:
Open class under the old rules, max 1,000 cu in.
Production Production, Modified, Sport all together in one class, max 910 cu in.

Modern would be:
Single engine max 550 cu in.
Twin engine max 1200 cu in
Unlimited twin engine max 1500 cu in

Historic would be boats 25 years old or older.
Modern is everything newer.

If you own an old race boat but aren't the original team, no problem. If you have an old race boat with modern engines and blowers, superchargers etc, you run with the modern class of U.

This is an opportunity for everyone to get out in the big waves again...(not really in the usual calm of June waters) and have some fun at safe speeds and have a good time.

This is an opportunity for the poker run guys to try racing and maybe decide to move up.

The ocean is a great leveling factor, cats and vees will run together in these classes. We are not about to create 35 classes so everyone can win their class.

The best thing to happen, is a 28 foot Magnum will win overall, with a crew of guys who never raced but always wanted to.

Just a thought. Not to many single powered race boats have the range of 100 miles. Just something to think about. It sounds like a great idea.

This is going to be a HUGE event. The town is very excited about having this race to coincide with thier annaversary of incorporation. Everything will be in Haulover Park.

More info to come as details get worked out. Just plan to be there. P-Class Racing? The run to Bimini will be a rule book that allows any boat to race. As for racing on Sunday? Its possible. See who all wants to play in P-Class?
