Thunder on the Gulf named top 20 event

Beach bums and race fans have yet another reason to grab their flip-flops and head to Orange Beach. The annual powerboat races – better known as Thunder on the Gulf – just added another award to the mantel as it was named a Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Event for the month of August 2008. This year’s event is slated for August 14-17.

“We are so ecstatic that this prestigious tourism organization has selected our race as a top 20 event,” said Beth Gendler, Director of Sales for the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau. “As many people know, the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission is taking over the marketing and sponsorship reins of the race while the Gulf Shores Powerboat Association along with the Offshore Super Series will handle race management. We feel this change will only enhance an already popular race.”

In addition to a weekend of exciting action on the gulf waters, fans will have the two chances to interact with their favorite racers and teams during an autograph session at Race Village and again during the Meet the Racers Party. Event organizers have added more retailers and vendors to Race Village, and special VIP tickets (for the party and Race Village entry) will be available.

“In 2006, we estimate that over 35,000 people attended this event,” Gendler said. “This turnout resulted in Thunder on the Gulf generating 14,200 room nights for the area in addition to $4.9 million in total spending.”

Dedicated to the promotion of tourism and the importance of festivals, events and attractions, the Southeast Tourism Society promotes 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The Sports Commission is a partnership between Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau, Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. For information on the 6th Annual Thunder on the Gulf, please visit www.alabamabeachsports.com.
