Lightbulb 2009 Race Info

Posted by Ron Polli

Thanks for everyone's input. It's not falling on deaf ears.

This schedule is not official yet, but it's real close.

Biloxi - March
Clearwater - April
Lake Cumberland - May
Sunny Isles Beach – June - with run to Bimini and back
Kenner – July - Al Copeland Invitational
Orange Beach - August - Invitational
LOTO – Sept
Worlds – Jupiter - October - Invitational

We also have a new TV show that should be announced next week or the week after.

I'm going to Lake Cumberland next week to meet with the authorities to hopefully get a green light for the next few years.

As for unification it won't happen anytime soon if ever, but joint races should be simple to do and a benefit for everyone involved. We did a few joint races with POPRA in the past. Hopefully we'll do some races with OPA in 09. As for SBI, I've tried 3 times in 08, it's clear to me now that working with SBI will never happen so I've given up on that one. (not SBI Bashing, just fact)

OSS is working with Stu and the Florida Powerboat club to bring racing and Poker Runs to the same FL venue. We'd love to work with other Poker Run groups at the other race sites outside of FL.

We are interested in improving our sport and our production. Like Pete B said, we are also in the entertainment business. Cities pay a lot of money to bring our show to their town, we need to give them their money's worth in return. So in 09 you'll see OSS doing HEAT RACING (like we did in Orange Beach this year) wherever possible. You'll see the elimination of the 525 Vee and Vee Extreme classes and in their place will be the two P1 style Power to Weight ratio classes. We also added 4 classes to accommodate the P-Class racer. No GPS units, we do it using average lap speeds.

I continue to be a fan of the sport and work for the betterment of OSS and the sport in general. I'm open to new ideas and concepts. If you'd like to talk, call 732 552 0669 or send me an email [email protected].

Lets work together to make 09 the best season of racing yet. Thank you for your thoughts and assistance.

Do you have details on how power will be determined? Also will there be scales at each race or a one-time weigh in only?

Scales are on the cranes, all the spec classes weigh on the way out after the race.

I believe they were working on some certified dyno facilites as well for the p1 style classes.

This Could Be the Start of Something Big
Wednesday, 04 February 2009 10:17 John Schaffner
Imagine, Labor Day Weekend in Port Clinton, Waterworks Park simply full of locals and visitors looking at exhibits, the Portage River Shoreline packed with 48’ Offshore Racing Power Boats, and a noise like you can’t believe coming from their exhausts. It could happen!
Local leaders heard on Monday about the potential of the Offshore Super Series (OSS) Powerboat Racing Association making Port Clinton, Ohio their home for a week as the central focus of what is being billed as Lake Erie Boat Week. The Event Coordinator, Janie Vogel, had been holding preliminary discussions with Larry Fletcher of the Ottawa County Visitor’s Bureau about the possibility of holding a portion of the event in Port Clinton. Up until last weekend, the bulk of the event was to have been hosted by Lyman Harbor in Sandusky. However, when they pulled out of consideration, the entire event now appears to have landed in Port Clinton.
The event is planned for September 2-6 and will consist of on and off-shore events surrounding the OSS Powerboat Race scheduled for Sunday, September 6. This event, yet to be named, will become part of the 2009 OSS National Schedule, which will include eight other events from Missouri to Alabama to Louisiana to the Florida Keys.
Aside from the OSS Race, the Lake Erie Boat Week event will consist of a Powerboat Regatta with on-water powerboat competitions, on-shore activities and parties, as well as the “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie competition planned for Thursday, September 3. Event Director, Janie Vogel, believes that this event alone will draw over 150,000 people to Ottawa County with an economic impact of better than $5-Million! Vogel indicates that the event should be complementary to the annual Green Island Sailboat Race hosted over Labor Day Weekend every year by Port Clinton Yacht Club.
One of the primary reasons Vogel asked the local community leaders to attend Monday’s meeting was the need for volunteer help and local logistical assistance. The only problem foreseeable, according to Vogel, would be the inability to gain the sponsorship critical to making an event like this happen. “We have a long way to go with the logistics of such a huge undertaking,” said Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester on Tuesday afternoon. “Right now things are looking very positive, and we’re going to try to work with the organizers to make it happen.”
So, imagine, the biggest boating event on Lake Erie, maybe in the Great Lakes, focused on Port Clinton, Ohio. It could happen.

Water is too rough and unpredictable for a shoot out.

the Lake Shootout isn't a part of the OSS races, the shootout is still the week before labor day like always. The LOTO OSS nationals are at the end of september. Looks to be just an additional race if this race in Ohio happens.
