Default OSS Orange Beach, Alabama Pre-Race Report

Pre-Race Report
Offshore Super Series (OSS)
Orange Beach, Ala.
August 17 – 19, 2007

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (August 13, 2007) – Dave Scott and the Budweiser Select Offshore Team will visit the Gulf of Mexico this week to compete in the 2007 Thunder on the Gulf. Scott and his crew are excited to be back in Alabama as they prepare to race the new 50’ Mystic.

Scott is ready to show fans on the Gulf Coast what this boat can really do. After a good debut run in Sarasota, Fla., Scott and crew believe the 50’ Mystic is ready to make a winning run in the OSS Cat Extreme class.

“I’m pretty excited to take the Mystic to Orange Beach,” Scott began. “It will be the first time we have it
out to debut the new paint scheme, and it looks sharp.”

In addition to the new look, the crew has been working hard to set up the boat for the conditions in Orange Beach. According to Scott, the waters off the Alabama coast have the potential to toss up some big surprises.

“The water in Orange beach can be really good for this boat,” Scott explained. “It usually has nice rollers and surprises at one end of the course. It can be flat, but don’t count on it. It can blow up pretty quickly. I think it will be a great race for us.”

In 2006, Scott and crew won their ninth National Championship on Lake Mead in Las Vegas. They also brought home the checkered flag in seven regular season races. The team won its class at the Lake Rescue Shootout with a speed of 178 mph and took second at the OSS World Championships in Destin, Fla. Scott and the Budweiser Select Team’s most recent win of 2007 came during the Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix in Sarasota, Fla. while debuting the 50’ Mystic. The team now looks forward to Orange Beach and a chance for another win in the new boat.

The Budweiser Select Team has raced in Orange Beach several times, and has seen first hand how rough it can actually be. However, with the addition of the 50’ Mystic to the fleet, Scott believes the team will be able to better handle the bigger water.

“This boat is obviously bigger than our 44’ MTI, and that will make a difference in how it handles the rough water,” Scott said. “We expect it to do really well. This race also gives us the chance to run the engines again. The more time we can put on the boat and the engines, the better.”

The north turn of the course is notorious for causing problems for teams, but Scott and throttleman, Johnny Tomlinson are prepared to handle whatever comes their way.

“It’s always going to have a hole,” Scott said of the tricky turn. “I think there is a shelf there, and it’s always going to be rough. It just so happens to be in the apex of that turn. Teams come in pushing too hard and get in trouble very quickly. Johnny and I always anticipate the boat taking a good hop, and we know we’ll have to correct it right away. If you get wrapped up in the moment and get too hot into the turn, it can definitely bite you.”

In addition to the racing action, Scott and the team are always happy to see fans come out to support the races.

“People really get into racing down south, and there is always a tremendous amount of support, especiallyfor the Budweiser Select Team,” Scott said. “We really appreciate all the fans that come out, and I anticipate a big turnout this year.”

Festivities for the Thunder on the Gulf will begin Thursday with a VIP Kickoff Party at Live Bait Too. The Dry Pits will be open to fans Friday – Sunday, and entertainment will take place throughout the weekend. Testing will begin Saturday at 10 a.m., and the first race on Sunday will begin at noon with the OSS Cat Extreme class racing at 3 p.m.

The Dave Scott Budweiser Select Offshore Race Team is one of the most successful offshore race teams in history, having earned seven world championships and nine national championship titles since 2001. The team is also the proud owner of six offshore speed records. Dave Scott and throttleman Johnny Tomlinson have more than 32 years of combined experience in offshore powerboat racing.
