Powerboat P1 Grand Prix Travels to Vigo, Spain

Powerboat P1 recently confirmed the historic city of Vigo as the venue for the first Powerboat P1 Grand Prix to be held in Spain. The largest city in the Galicia region will host the fifth round of the 2008 P1 World Championship, September 12-14.

As Powerboat P1 seeks to stage its Grand Prix of the Seas races in popular, exotic tourist locations, Vigo is ideal as an Atlantic Ocean port city that attracts pleasure boaters and cruise ships alike. With excellent rail and highway service to major cities, and the airport of Peinador just 10 km away, Vigo is located conveniently for boat and race fan transport. The Porta del Sol is at city center and hosts the tall gilded sculpture, Sireno. The half-man/half sea creature figure is the work of Paco Leiro, representing the dual nature of Vigo. The old city, “Casco Vella” is alive with tiny streets and shops, a draw for the many cruise ship and race fan visitors.

At the launch of the Spanish Grand Prix of the Sea, Powerboat P1 Managing Director, Jim O’Toole said, "As the international appeal of Powerboat P1 grows, we are breaking ground with our new race venues. We came to Spain because of Vigo’s warm and positive response--the ‘city of the sea’ has both the infrastructure and facilities required for a Powerboat P1 event. The encouragement from the city of Vigo, the region of Galicia and their powerboat federations ensures this as a major marine market with a strong history of hosting powerboat racing and world-class sports events. Vigo will offer an outstanding Grand Prix weekend,” he added.

Vigo's Deputy Mayor, Santiago Dominguez said: "It is a tremendous honor for Vigo to host the Powerboat P1 Grand Prix for the first time in Spain. We really believe in the event and hope that this will be the start of a long and successful relationship with the P1 World Championship. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone here in September."

Recognizing the potential of Powerboat P1’s global reach and the impact of the Grand Prix events on the local economy, more cities and resort destinations are investing in P1’s draw as a sports and entertainment event. This year more than 500,000 people are expected to attend the seven events in Europe, Tunisia and Bahrain, while a worldwide television audience in excess of 100 million watches at home. This year, Virtual Spectator’s arrangement with P1 will enable real-time, 3-D race viewing from a computer.

Powerboat P1 racing features the fastest mono hull boats competing in over 14 races across three continents for the only true World Championship title. The opening event of the season will be the Italian Grand Prix of the Sea from 9th to 11th May at the Adriatic resort of San Benedetto del Tronto; the World Championship will be held in Bahrain.

The 2008 series has grown to a record entry of 24 teams, providing the marine industry with a global marketing platform and spectators and TV viewers with a world class spectacle.
