I asked for a 572CI block, fuel injected engine that had the internals to eventually supercharge. I'm at 650 HP now but I have a Whipple on my Christmas list.
I agree that 750 - 775 HP should get you where you want to be at the mid-eighty range.

The Saris Racing Engines are just magic! I don't know why, but that's just the way it is. But seriously, my motor has more in it but Jason set it up to only turn 5200 RPM's because I told him that I wanted rock solid reliability and kick a$$ aceleration. So that's what he built. I don't want to squeeze every ounce out of it because I'd rather buy gas and boat soda's than rebuilds. 78 - 79 MPH is plently of fun for the fresh water boating I do. The great thing about building an engine with Saris Racing Engines is that they actually ask you want you want first and then deliver it.

Mine ran 81.6 on GPS with approximately 700hp Bischoff Racing Engines 540ci but I bought it with that motor and never saw dyno sheets so who knows exact HP (but the guy I bought it from wasnt a BS artist).
I now have a 675hp 547ci Tunnel Ram motor in it built by Active Racing Engines. Imco Drive.
Dont know what she will run yet but I assume 80-84 depending on prop and conditions.
They are always faster in the salt as well. I only run fresh water (I have not run salt but from reading on here that seems like the consensus).
I was told by the previous owner that he ran 97mph with 900hp blower motor in my boat.

Yeah, I'm glad to see all the responses.. but, I knew you Pantera owners are a fairly active bunch from lurking in your section for quite a while.
ar-15: Is yours a race or pleasure boat? Guessing race.. cuz thats pretty fast per hp.
