I've been boating on this lake for 30 years and they've been anti powerboat (as long as you're over 28' and can go over 45 mph) for as long as I can remember.

The below note was sent to the LGPC and various mayors and chamber of commerce in the LG basin.

Mr. Young,

It’s recently come to my attention that your agency has reversed a previous decision by the LGPC to approve the running of a powerboat Poker Run on Lake George Columbus Day weekend

As a lifetime visitor and now local property owner, I find this decision hard to understand. This event has been run several times in the past and very successfully for the event organizers, as well as for the local economy.

My understanding is that boat speed and safety around the Narrows has been cited as a primary reason for revocation. In this event, all safety protocol was to be followed including pace boats, speed limits, a strict no alcohol policy, as well as mandatory lifejackets on all participating boats. If your concern is safety through the narrows the LGPC could easily have enforced a 15 mph limit through designated hazardous areas. This is what other poker runs I’ve attended do in areas where low speeds are required. Why would the LGPC not propose this as a condition to running the event?

As a local taxpayer, supporter and friend to local business owners, it’s hard to fathom the logic that this reversal was based upon. Given the recent announcement by the Sagamore Hotel to close this winter, one might think the local governing bodies would be at minimum be as supportive as possible to any group planning an event in the area. This type of event attracts arguably the most wealthy demographic in the US to the Lake George area. On a per person basis, the money injected into the local economy by them would be higher than any other group event in the Lake George basin.

While I recognize the LGPC’s primary function is not to drive the local economy, please be aware that decisions the LGPC makes do have an impact on local business. The hundreds of thousands of dollars this event would have brought in Columbus Day weekend will now be spent downstate on the Hudson river supporting local economies, as another Poker Run event will now be run in an area more friendly to boaters and more supportive of their local economy.

It’s too bad really, as this decision will only make this winter harder for local residents.

Sincerely,

Matt Cevasco
Thanks Matt

Johnny, and others, you are welcome. LG is one of the places where performance boating started back in the 1920's. Instead of keeping boats like yours away, you'd think there would be a way to market the history of performance boating on the lake and drive more tourism dollars.
Too many in the area would rather see a group with a 16 ft boat and a 50 horse Merc cooking dinner over a local camp fire than performance boating crew spending money in fine hotels and restaurants.

I just don't get it.

A few of us booked rooms at Marine Village hotel and when we called them on Saturday to tell them about the cancellation they had no problem saying we would receive a full refund once we sent a letter from Norm over to them. Well we sent the letter now they dont want to issue a refund. We have eight rooms over there and I dont think its right for them to keep all that money, about 120.00 deposit per room and 50.00 per boat.....So now it looks like credit cards will be getting calls as well as the BBB..... Im really f---king pissed with the lake george people lately....I have vacationed for over 17 years up there spending two week at a time and a **** load of money, plus many many weekend trips during the summer. After last years event went sour I didnt even go up there at all this year.Shame on Marine Village for not helping us out and Im sure they will love the BBB in a couple of weeks.
