Powerboat P1 Announces New 2008 Schedule and Venues

The Powerboat P1 World Championship racing series announced its 2008 schedule with the introduction of five new venues, including an inaugural Grand Prix in the Middle East and first French and Spanish Grand Prix of the Sea events.

The Championship will visit a minimum of seven host cities with two races in each, an endurance and a sprint event, starting in Italy in early May and concluding in the Middle East in mid-October. The Italian Grand Prix of the Sea will be run in conjunction with the Italian Powerboat Series (IPS), ensuring a strong starting line up. The final European round will again take place in Portimão, Portugal which joins Valletta, Malta, as repeat host cities from 2007. These highly popular European destinations are complimented by Grand Prix events in Marseilles, France, Vigo, Spain and Hammamet, Tunisia, adding travel diversity to P1’s new line up.

"As the international appeal of Powerboat P1 builds, the calendar will continue evolve and we are happy to announce such an eclectic mix of top-class venues on three continents," states Jim O’Toole, Managing Director, Powerboat P1 Management Ltd. "More and more cities and resort destinations are investing in P1 to secure long-term rights to our dynamic sports and entertainment platform. They share our enthusiasm for the Championship and recognize the potential of its global reach and the positive impact of our event on their local economies," he adds.

"We are breaking new ground within Europe by adding races in France and Spain, while adding the Middle East signifies another new adventure for P1. This is an exciting development as we continue to establish P1’s credentials beyond Europe, strongly supported by our teams, the manufacturers and the marine industry." O’Toole emphasizes.
