Default 38 Avenger?? questions

I am thinking about buying a 38 avenger 1999-2001 model year. Are all of these years the same or are there and differences ?

I would like to go at least 70 mph gps so what type of power do I ??
502MPI 500 EFI 500 HP and what is the difference between these engines? and what is there Hp ratings?

Are there any issues with these model years?

Does anybody have any background info on the 38.s that cumberland marine has?

I have a super clean 2002 BAJA 302 WITH 6.2 MPIS AND AM LOOKING FOR MORE SPEED AND ROOM.

Will the 38 handle as good as the 302 in the corrners with the steped hull and are there any other handling issues with a stedped hull I need to know about??

Thanks in advance for the info,

Dave

Bigracks,

You will like the ride of the step hull compared to the Baja ride. The 38' Powerquests handle the rought stuff much better. Do not let a step hull scare you. They handle a little differently at first but once you get used to it you will never go back. If you are above 50 mph just let the hull get set before you crank the wheel on around and you will not have any trouble. I would suggest the 500's over the 502's.

Well, since none of the 380 folks have responded to your question I will. The stepped hull 340 will run upper 70's with 496HO's and stock props....even hit on 80 with a totally dialed in set of props. So, I would think a 380 will easily be in the 70's with 502's.

But I agree with PA.....get one with 500's. You will be glad you did. Otherwise, I highly recommend the 496 over the 502. They are sweet motors in lieu of going blue.

Bigracks,

I know a guy that has a 98' 380 with 502's and it will run in the low 70's. I have a 380 with 525's and it will run in the low to mid 80's depending on water conditions. I got my props reworked and blueprinted in the ozark's and I recorded 85 mph on the GPS. It really helps having a matched set of props.

Bigracks, I own a 2000 with 502s. Boat will run 74.1 on GPS and handle big water with ease. 500s will get you close, to if not in the 80s.
But they bring lots more money. Dont be scared about handling and the step hull, there is a ton of bad info out there, steps are the way to go.
I went from a 29 PQ with 7.4s and the diff in room is huge.
My boat is for sale if you have any questions, call me at 616-450-1380.

Dave
It was nice meeting you and your family this past week, I take it that the misses liked the room in my boat and you have decided to look into them. I wish that I would have taking you for a ride in the rough stuff on Saturday to let you find out about the ride, but that could be arranged easily enough. As I said I would sell mine if you are interested and since the rebuild I get much better fuel econ no seriously I did not have the right props on this past week for a speed run but I will soon and I'll post it then. I would look for a boat with 500 or more just because blue has better resale value in my opinion, just my .02.
You should come back for the shootout next month and go for a ride. Take care.

Rich.
