230 Conquest Exhaust Question
A question came up on my 230 for sale, as to if it had silent Choice. Nope, but it does have some kind of muffler system.
Anybody who used to have one know anything about them?
Just after the manifold there is a cast iron casing approximately 8-10" long by 5-6" wide before it goes through the hull to the tips. It has a pretty good rumble at first start and some what tempers when the cooling water gets flowing. While I don't know the brand (black, merc?) or type, I said I'll ask on the PQ board what they are.

I had a 23 a few years ago but it had silent choice no mufflers. The tips however had a muffler built in. I ended up replacing the tips without the so called mufflers built it and there was a huge difference in noise. She sounder real sweet but without silent choice it was a little tough to have a conversation. If you can post a photo that would help. If there small round black plastic tubes than that would be a muffler. But back in 1991 that would have been rare. My guess is you have straight pipes to the tips and the tips have some sort of internal muffler.

Hey Shawn,
Your exhaust tips probably just have internal baffles , which were common in those years. They most likely won't pass the db noise requirements for Mi. Especially here in the Grand Haven & Holland ports with the over- aggressive Marine Patrol.

Shawn - from your description it sounds like you have the factory installed Merc Quicksilver cast-iron mufflers. These were factory installed by Power Play starting in 1990 if Silent Choice was not ordered on a boat. A boat could not legally be released from the mfg. without some form of muffler as the noise law started in 1990. These were very heavy parts - have not seen a set of them for many years.

Woogie,
That's what they look like. I am not sure about the raised lettering on the side, but yeah that's close as I can remember.
The Exhaust tips are hollow and you can look in and see the flappers in about 8".
I like your avatar, NICE! - Tough on the equipment
