Prop help needed - 29 Fountain - Julie or Brett
I have a 1993 Fountain 29' fever twin w/ new motors. We did not dyno these motors but they pull pretty hard. I have tried 2different sets of props. The boat has nose cosen and standard length drives in 1.5 ratio.
The first set was the Hydromotive 5 blade round ear in 27 pitch. The boat ran 85.4 MPH on gps at 5500 RPM but it feels like it is dragging the back of the boat (no transom lift). Cruise speed excelent. Drivability good up till about 82 MPH after that it gets a little squirlley.
The next set that I tried were Hydromotive quad 4 in a 28 pitch that had been labbed and had a diffuser ring added (borrowed props). With these props the boat ran 89.6 MPH at 5600 RPM. The boat seemed to have transom lift. The cruise speed went down considerably. Drivability was good other than if it ever started chine walking you had to come of plane to ever to get back under controll. I know that some of this could be driven through with more seat time but I only had the props for a couple of hours.
Just for kicks I put on a set of Hydromotive quad 4 in a 26 pitch without a diffuser ring nowing that these were to small but to see if the diffuser ring made any difference and it seemed to but the rev limiters are set at 5700 RPM and i did not run them upto 5500 RPM. I know that it was not traveling as fast and that may have been the reason that it did not chine walk as bad. Should diffuser rings make any difference on chine walk?
My question is would a Hydromotive 5 blade cleaver tipped propeller keep some of the top end speed and control the chine walk better than the 4 blade. Also would some of the cruise speed come back? What would be realistic to expect out of 5 blade cleaver tipped props in a 27 or 28 pitch?
Is there some other props that may work better than the ones I have listed or tried?
Thanks,
Allen

I cannot help you to much on the props, I have a friend with the same boat, newer, stock 454 mag efi's and played with props a bit, but those boats can get unruly about 80 and some props worse than others. but fountain fist pulled the 502's from the boat then the big blocks all together, handling issues, seems those boats do not balance well with big blocks, how many time have you been asked if your boats sinking ?? they sit low, anyway good luck...Rob

Allen, Don't know how much this will help...Had a '92 29' with 502's, std. drive length. Came w/ Mirage 3 blades, yielded top speed vs. the multiple 4 blades I tried, due to the low X dimension, but 4 blades increased the cruise speeds.
Hydro 5 blades: the P5 is supposed to maximize stern lift, vs the P5X, which is more like a B1, max. bow lift... If you tried the P5X already, you could get more stern lift, increased cruise and better handling with the P5 design.
If you tried the P5 already, then I defer to Julie or Brett ...
