Default '89 292 454 Magnums prop and rpm

So I have an 89 formula 292 with 454 magnums. Motors have been rebuilt and have a comp cam that adds alittle mid to top end. Everything else is stock.
I have tried all sorts of props with the stock 23p quicksilvers being the fastest at 66mph at 5000 rpms. But the mid range kinda sucked and I went with some 23p mirage plus.
These props the boat only turns 4800 rpms and 64mph. I would really like to be around the 5200 mark. Can these props be repitched to 22p or the circumference cut down?

My 89 272 with 7.4's ran upper 60's all day long. But mid range performance was not stellar.
My props were not labbed but thinned out 25 straight Mirages.
Mopower has a friend running a 292 same vintage. Maybe he can chime in, or just PM him.
My guess would be a 22-24 labbed Bravo if you want a midrange cruise prop.
But from what you are saying the 23 is all you can spin; then the 22 will be closer.
One option is to go with the 24 and take an 1/8" off diameter to be able to spin them faster, but have the higher pitch.
But before jumping into too many options, see if you can borrow some 22's and get a baseline.

jg 1000,

Sorry for the delay in response.
I feel the best option is to have us Lab your current 23 M+ props to get the best performance we can from them. We can get better bow lift, speed and acceleration from those propeller with the correct Lab recipe.
If you were concerned about cruise speed as a main goal, Labbed Bravo 1's with the correct recipe or Revolution 4 props would work great.
I would not consider Hydromotive propellers on this application.

fordf350, 5.62% slip out of your package sounds a little far fetched.

The cost to Lab Mirage Plus propellers is $392. This includes adjusting the recipe specifically to your boats needs rather than a standard every day template.
Call us when you have the chance and we can discuss the process in more detail.

Thank you,
Brett

I just did back to back tests with my Formula 292. The props were, a factory labbed Bravo One 25 pitch and a Hydromotive 25 pitch in stock form. The Hydromotive was faster at every RPM point, the only advantage to the bravo one is that it came on plane with less throttle not to say the Hydro was bad just slower to plane than the Bravo. The big difference here is that 2 labbed Bravos are $2100.00 two Hydros are around $1100.00.

endeavour32,

Factory (Mercury) Labbed Bravo 1 props are the wrong recipe for your hull. First they are made out of 26 castings and the cup has been reduced causing the slip to be higher than a stock Hydromotives causing the rpm to rpm comparison to be tough.
Bravo 1 propellers Labbed correctly will run much better than the factory Labbed props and really can't be compared.
We charge $1900 for Labbed Bravo 1 props done specific to your boat and adjust them for free if needed. And we do all work in house which affords you options.
Hydromotive propellers are great props. We sell service and support Hydromotive propellers but your comparison isn't apples to apples.

I do wonder what your top WOT versus rpm was for each set?

Brett
