Re: Who's Scarab KV is this for sale?
Belongs to a guy in NJ. I had bought it last year. Went through the survey / sea trial and everything. A few days before delivery he decided not to sell it. He just contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I wanted to buy it, but I have bought another boat.
It is nice but needs some work, mostly cosmetic. Lots of paint scratches in that very expensive paint job, some cracked vinyl in the back seat. Bolsters were ok. Some wood support structure for the back seat needed replacing. Some minor cracking on the stbd and port side hull to deck joint, Some softness in the cockpit sole and cabin sole, moisture in the foam surrounding the fuel tank. Most of the gauges did not work. Lighting issues, cockpit drains were draining directly onto fuel tank which has saturated the foam sealer. The tank was recommended to come out and new foam installed. Trailer was ok with a small bend in a forward brace. Electric brakes that were not tested on my survey. Hull was in good shape, as was the transom per the surveyor. Deck clear coat was peeling in spots and fading in others.
The engines are nice but the port one has a compression problem with one cylinder which I assume he fixed last year before running it. (o compression on #5 due to an open exhaust valve in one cylinder detected on the leakdown test.) I'm certain he fixed it. Compressions were all good. Lowest was 165, highest was 180 psi. Riser leaks were also noted. They were built by Lingenfelter engineering several years ago. (1997 if I remember.) He figured 100 - 150 hours on them as of last year. Could be more or less. The boat was in storage for years after the engines were built. If I remember he bought the boat in Washington state and had it shipped out to NJ.
Boat hit about 52 mph on the survey but again, 1 cylinder was out that was not found until later in the day. Water and air were also pretty cold. I really loved the boat even though it needed work. Rare and unique. If I had not bought another boat I would buy it today. I was trying to convince him to keep it a few weeks ago. I was pretty p*ssed when the deal did not go through last year, but I'm happy with what I decided on. Hopefully it will go to someone who will spend some time bringing it back to great orriginal condition. I wonder how many of these there are left now?
