Default Scarab I steering wheel issues. Any help would be great!

Has anyone ever successfully changed there steering wheel on their 21 Scarab I? I've been able to take my wheel off, its only held on by 6 allen bolts, but them when I get to the hub, there is know way I can get that to move. I tried almost everthing I know and can't get it to budge. I don't want to screw up my steering system for a new wheel but the old wheel is nasty looking.

Any advise, help, walkthrus would be great. Also any pics of your new wheel. Let me know.

Thanks for the help!

The hubs are fairly standard and can be a b1tch to get off. You may be able to borrow a deep gear puller that will do it. The other option is to use a sawsall and cut a slot all the way into the shaft-just be careful and slow near the strg shaft. once you cut the slot it will lose it's press and come off. If you cut a little into the shaft it wont hurt anything.

I agree with the deep gear puller and then after you have it pulling pretty good, tap on it a little bit all the way around and it ought to free it up. Good Luck!!

loosen the nut but don't take it all the way off. Get a buddy to help...Have him hold a hammer and you grab that wheel at 9 and 3 and pull like hell...Then have him wack the shaft. The nut will keep the wheel from hitting you in the face.

Just take the nut all off and look at your friends reactions when the steering wheel comes off :-)

used a gear puller the other day on mine; once it started to come off about 1/4" then the rest was easy. - jeff
