99 scarab with twin hp500's speeds? weight?
I'm looking at a 99' scarab that got repo'd by the bank. Its got twin hp500's and 26 pitch bravo's on it. WHat kind of speeds could I expect? ANybody have any experience on how these boats handle compared to other major brands? Any ideas what the boat weighs?

What size? 33? 38? The 33s weigh about 8500 dry, the 38s about 9800 dry.
If it is a 33 26 bravos are not enough prop. With the right prop you should see around 82 w/ 500s
The 33s and 38s handle very well for comparable boats of there size. The 33 won the Powerboat Offshore Boat of the Year Award in 98.

ha ha yeah, a length would help eh? Good thing you're psychic, I was asking about the 33. I was thinking it was strange it only had 26 bravo's on it. I"m thinking it might have had some labbed props on it and before it got repo's somebody just stuck on 26's. 8500 seems really heavy for that boat. Thats a problem, my envoy denali I think is only rated at 6700lbs.

You would be insane to even think about pulling that with an Envoy.

hence why I said "thats a problem"
Upon closer inspection, the reason its only running 26p bravos is unfortunately because they are fake HP500. I had the broker send me higher def pics. Somebody actually spent the money to put HP500 valvecovers and the flame arrestor on the motors so people would think its got HP500's. THe exhaust, the intake manifold and carb are all from an hp but the block and heads aren't (along with some other hardware). I could see buying the intake and carb and stuff like that off of a used motor to get it cheaper, but the valve covers and the flame arrestor, thats just being deceptful.

Something is not right with what your seeing. If it is a 99 with original cab'd motors, they would be/should be 500s. Any lesser power offered in 99 would have been fuel injected. Are the motors not original? If not, perhaps they are built to 500 spec, hence some of the parts?
Even with stock 502 mpi 415 hp the boat is still a 75-76 mph boat.

maybe I should send you the motor pics? They look like to me like regular merc bb with hp 500 parts, but the hp500 in my boat is older, so maybe some things have changed? PM me your email if you dont mind.

1999 38' Scarab AVS w/ 500EFIs
|
I don't know if this helps any but I have a 1999 38' Scarab AVS w/ 500EFIs. The motors have some induction work, it's rigged 2" high with 2" IMCO shorties spinning 30 pitch labbed Bravo's. I'm just playing with this combination but this weekend in moderate chop I saw 83.9 GPS. That was me in the boat, half full of fuel. My boat is also 40% Kevlar layup.

PM sent.
Keep in mind, the 502 mags and the HP500s shared the same bottom end, the difference was the heads, cam, intake and exhaust.
Jimishooch, I have the article somewhere. give me a fax and I will send it.
