38' flatdeck question
I just bought a 38' flatdeck, there is a fuel tank under the back bench and looks like there might be one under the floor too. Does anybody know what size the tank is under the floor?
thank you,
steve

Its an 1985. I bought the blue '85 with arnesons, no motors that was on here a couple weekes ago. I had an 1990 '31 excel that I sold last winter to buy a more "family" crusier style boat, but I couldnt stay away from the speed. I guess eventually I will get this boat going one day. I would love to talk to someone that is very knowledgeable about the flatdecks.

I think everyone is a little confused by what you said. I had an 87, there was one fuel tank under the floor. If by under the rear seat you mean actually the opening is in the floor under the rear seat then it's probably still all one tank. Although I saw the other thread and I suspect you have a very custom and unusual boat. Although so did I including Arnesons and the tank was stock.
I remember I got to mine by pulling up a piece right in front of the rear seat.
I have a lot of the old catalogs and spec sheets, 87 says 204 and 88 says 130 gallons. I never got anywhere near that in mine and suspect it really was around 130.
1981 says 160.
1982 says 155. `
1984 says 204.
1986 says 204
1987 says 204
1988 says 130
Of course I'm missing 85. I guarantee the 87 number was wrong and I bet it was 130, so bracketing all those other years I'm sure the brochure for your year would say 204, but I'm betting 130 like my 87. I think they finally got around to telling the truth in 88.
I suggest you try and contact John Connor, he rigged my boat with ASD8's and his custom engines in 87 and he sounded as if he had done a boat like that before. My boat left Wellcraft as a complete boat less engines and drives. I bet he had something to do with yours as well or he knows who did. There just are not that many Wellcraft 38's with Arnesons on them. There are some Larry Smith's. I've been looking for years to find my old boat and this one of yours is the first one I've seen.

Thank you for the info LeeS. Do you happen to have John Connor's phone number? I would be interested in talking to him.
The reason I was asking about the fuel tanks is, there is a fuel tank that runs sideways on top of the floor, under the rear bench from port to starboard. The actual seat is mounted on it. It looks factory, but I rather it not be there. If there is a tank under the floor, I would rather just use that one, if its big enough. I guess the best solution would be to pull the floor out.
As for the drives, it looks like there is a smaller/different diameter bolt pattern were the drives bolt on, as if there might have been a different style surface drive on it before? It does not look like it had regular outdrives on it. I do not see any patch work of anykind, but someone could have patched it up really well.

John should be able to tell you everything you need to know about Arnesons and Scarabs from the 80's. Another source might be Rik at Arneson.
John was Betty Cook's throttleman and team mgr back in the day. He also did the same thing for Tom Gentry.
