looking at a 1990 22' scarab
Im looking to buy my first boat, it is a 1990 scarab 22' for around 9,000.
the boat has a 500 hour 350 mag, trailer, new gel coat and seems to be well maintained.
I plan on having a quality prebuy inspection done to check the boat and motor but I am wondering if there boats are money pits or if it is solid 20 year old platform.
any help and experience is greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Mike

I own the exact same boat (1990 Scarab 21' with a 350 Mag, 420 hours)
I think it was a great way to jump into the boating world. I've seen no evidence of rot or anything on my boat. It handles Erie chop on a nice day, but I wouldn't take it out on a windy one. It's the perfect size for inland lakes / occasional trips on Erie and St. Claire.
The price seems a little high, or I got a great deal on mine. I payed 7k for the same boat a couple years ago, bone stock with a minty original interior.
If your ok with the price, pick it up! I love mine, and even when I upsize to a larger more capable great lakes boat, I plan to hang onto it for the inland lakes.
Post some pictures! I'd love to see some.

i have a 1990 w/454 in excellent condition. This was a heavier and better made hull than the mid 90's 22 models. I run in lake erie all the time w/no problem with 2-3 footers nice even chop. I have it rack stored at Copper Kettle marina in lorain Ohio. The boat has ALWAYS been high and dry storage its whole life, and professionally maintained. It's for sale 10k firm.

Got a 89 22' with a 525sc motor in it. Good solid boat. I beat it on 3'+ cape cod chop all summer and still haven't split her in two. Look in the engine bay, the glass seperates from the wood stringers. I've seen a couple like this. Its a ez fix as long as the strings still solid.
