1998 38' Scarab Perfect Storm
Re: Weights of Scarab 38

airshares, I own a 38' Scarab and pull it with a 99 Tahoe. The Tahoe pulls it just fine. There is no wobble at any speed. The weight of my 98 Scarab is 9100 Lbs (dry). An aluminum trailer weights 1500 Lbs. That brings you to a total of 10,600 Lbs. The trailer weight rating of a 99 Tahoe is 10,000 Lbs. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is 13,500 Lbs. Any trailer specialist will tell you the GVWR is what you should really look at when trailering heavy loads. The GVWR is the total weight of the trailer and boat package including all gear and fuel in the boat plus all the weight in the truck including passengers and gear. Another important consideration is the tongue weight. This should be 10% of the total boat / trailer combination. if you properly balance the boat in this fashion you should eliminate any wobble. One last point is the newer style Tahoes GVWR is significantly lower than the old style Tahoe. This is one reason I purchased a used 99 Tahoe instead of a new one. Hope this helps.

Re: Weights of Scarab 38

I once towed a 10000 pound boat and trailer with a short bed 1/2 ton pickup. STUPID. No trlr brake STUPIDER!! I would not try to go highway speeds with a Tahoe and a 10600# load. One quick move by another driver or yourself and you've had it.When the trailer starts to be twice the weight of the truck you better have rock hard(as in Semi or 1 ton) Suspension.

Re: Weights of Scarab 38

as for as i know a 91 , 38 is 9100lbs. dry , and should have triaxle trailor for legal and safty and handleing purpuses. so i would find a truck you can live with and is regestered to pull the total gvw, legally if 5/0 stops you in travel the fine could be alot . if you plan to go futher than your house to the ramp a block away and 4 wheel will get you out if whether changes while your out there , get more power its always there if you need it ford f 550 / f350 min.

My 1996, 38 is 10,500 lbs., the Myco trailer (Steel) is 2500 plus 2 9' boxes on each side at 350 each. I haul it all over the east coast with a Dodge Dully, diesel automatic.

Re: Weights of Scarab 38

I pull my 38 Scarab with a 3/4 ton 4wd Suburban. It has the big motor, and 411 rear end. It pulls with no problem, the truck is rated for 12,000 lb. towing capacity. I also added rear air bags and replced the factory hitch with a heavy duty one.
The other factor to consider is your trailer. A good trailer (MYCO) will make it easier to tow, and easier to stop. Mine has electric/hydraulic disc brakes and stops better than when I am not towing. Good luck, and enjoy your Scarab!

94' Scarab Thunder
Thumbs up Re: Weights of Scarab 38

I tow my 94' 38' Scarab thunder with a F-350 Dually.The
boat weighs 9,100 dry.Add 150 gallons of gas(1,200lbs.)
and coolers and gear and the boat weighs around 10,500.
I have it on a tri-axle 12,500 trailer.I drive a tractor-trailer
for a living. I would not feel comfortable or safe with
anything less than a 1ton truck.Much better safe than sorry!
