Re: Hydraulic Steering when is it necessary?

If you're on a budget and can do your own wrenching, see this post for full hydraulic.

Re: Installing hydraulic steering.

I'm guessing your 2.5" differential was from the drive not swinging fully one way or the other. Tiller arm hitting inside?
Anyway, looks like you got the job done. I built almost the exact setup on...

Re: camshaft wear

I've heard 2 things on various auto/engine forums.
1) Bad batch of cores from china. Just poor grade material.
2) Comp cams recently cam out with a statement blaming changes in oil formulation....

Re: Oil in TRS bellows

Could be either tranny or drive. Red is usually tranny fluid. Or if you're real lucky it's just motor oil, tranny fluid, drive lube, or bilge gunk that spilled on the tranny tailstock and ended up in...

Re: Cylinder leakage

Yeah but you need to loosen all the rockers so the valves stay closed.
If you check at TDC, the engine could turn over if it's not exactly at TDC. That's especially true on small engines. You'll...

Re: 256 Blowers Who's Best? B&M, Weiand, Blower Shop

Ask about the rear bearings.
As I understand it, some are sealed, some are in an oil bath. The sealed ones do not seem to last very long.

Re: Cylinder leakage

Just buy one. After buying 2 guages and a regulator, it's more trouble/cost than it's worth.
But if you've got A LOT of free time. Here are instructions:

Re: Built 496 w/ Weiand 525sc blower...Need advice

They were running Demons, 650s I think.
Try the holley wesite, they have a lot of good info, even on marine supercharger setups.
They have a tech line too. Never tried it, but it may help

Re: Built 496 w/ Weiand 525sc blower...Need advice

Center ones were very rich, especially at idle (black plugs). Lots of loading up, rpm oscillations, even with MSD.
CMC around here sets their 502/250 blower motors with twin carbs, and they have a...

Re: Built 496 w/ Weiand 525sc blower...Need advice

The 177 used on the 525SC is pretty much at it's limits on the 454. The 250 is a great combo with around 500 cid.
I just did some work on a 502, intercooled, 250, with a single dominator. Fuel...

Re: 454/365 question

Might be worth a set of low compression pistons if you're doing a rebuild.
The 525SC CR is only 7.5:1.

Re: Tech, Mech, Apprentice

Hmmm, my training is in designing drugs.
I just break a lot of stuff that I have to fix myself, because there are so few real marine mechanincs around LOTO.

Re: what is the ideal water temp for a hi po n/a engine?

I've always run the coolest that allows the oil to get up to temp.

Re: Did Scarab ever make a 50' hull?

That's been sitting there, uncovered, forever.
But then again, it's not like Scarabs were known for stringer or transom rot issues when left out like that. :p

Re: what to look for and what to stay away from in used #6 drives

Check with BAM, or someone who rebuilds them. My understanding is that early 6 wet sump parts are getting hard to find.

Re: How much (or just how) to change a bad lifter?

Oops, 96 was start of Gen VI. Yep they'll be more than $200, especially if you buy Merc parts.

Re: How much (or just how) to change a bad lifter?

I expect they're changing all the lifters.
To pull the intake, change all lifters, put everything back together + parts (hydraulic lifters + gaskets), then adjust them, is almost a full days work....

Re: Hawk 525SC cam suggestion

IMHO, 13 is too little initial on a blower motor and 35 is too much.
The Tbolt IV V6 box gives about 20 initial, 30 total. Perfect.

Re: Hawk 525SC cam suggestion

Both Hawk and Merc run lower compression on their 525SC.
The Hawk is a little more conservative. Timing is set at 26 total.
Try a smaller blower pulley without changing the timing. I ran the next...

Re: Staggered vs sbs

The drives are lower, going down the V, relative to the center of gravity. This allows a higher X dimension, relative to the bottom of the boat. So you can run 1-2" higher X diimension, still have...
