Most non 'fuel/ignition cut rev limiters' do this. They slowly start to pull random firing events so that by the time you get to your rev limit, you will not exceed it.

This is why I warn people...

MSD's and etc are only mostly needed for the most part with non-quench engines and/or bad tune-ups.

Pssst: obviously we know the high cyl psi deal...but not many marine engines have this.
