Yes, the shifting is in the upper, but all 3 gears only contact 1 side of the gear tooth...you flip the top and the bottom gear and the pinion contacts the
same side of the gear as it was in it's...

The upper gears are always running the same...

The upper gears are always running the same direction....the wear is always on one side of the tooth, whichever gear is reverse will generally have less wear than the gear used for forward.
