38'TG vs 42' Fountain
I always just have to start some chit ya know....
I looked up speeds of the two boats with 525's...here is where we stand....
TG Test in Powerboats.com
http://www.powerboatmag.com/2004test..._cigarette.php
Cigarette TopGUN
PERFORMANCE TEST RESULTS
Centerline 37'8"
Beam 8'
Weight as tested 9,175 pounds
Price as tested $400,000
Engine, cubic inch/horsepower Mercury Racing HP525EFI, 502/500
Propeller Mercury Bravo One 15 1/4" x 32"
Acceleration zero to 15 seconds NA
Top speed at rpm 86.4 mph at 5,000
Fountain 42' with T-525's
From Fountain's website:
Stats for the Lightning (should be the same for an'05 EX as well).
.."twin 525 EFI Mercury's, boosts the boat to over 85mph". The EX weighs 10,300lbs..heavier than a Cig...I am surprised...I thoguht it was the other way around.
My comments:
The TG and Fountain obviously are very very close in speed with 525's.
A 2005 Fountain Ex for about 200-215K with 525's is a great deal especially with the Lightning's super ventilated bottom.
The Lightning at near 300K with 525's approached the Cigarette's price of quotes I have received between 340-360k.
Not much difference in price.
Only point....both boats go fast...the 42' Executioner is a very good deal on a very good boat. This may shake the market up a bit....
Gotta let us know what you get on your GPS Dave!!
I see Reggie is painting boats on the side...

Reggie's super ventilated bottom is about as efficient as a cat which is very very fast...the Cigarette is considered a "very fast bottom".
Overall though expect the 2 boats to perform the same...with the cabin and extra weight being the equalizer....
.....I have begun to realize that this may sway a "fence sitter" one way or the other...but a die-hard Fountain fan or Cigarette fan isn't going to be moved much in either direction.
I will conclude that the new '05 42 EX has got to be one of the best things going and with interest rates where they are a payment of a grand a month should move a lot of beaks from the factory into your local marinas.

Re: 38'TG vs 42' Fountain
IF...I could afford a Cig for 400k, I would spend another 100k and get the epoxy Fountain w/1075...upper 120's...and a nice ride to boot.

You really do not need the extra cost of the epoxy layup. My new 42 Lightning equipped with the 1100 HP Sterlings will run in excess of 130 MPH on pimp gas (93 Octane). Turn the boost up and run race fuel and I assume I will be pushing the needle past the 140 mark.
The new (2005) Lightning has more freeboard and the boat runs higher in the bow as compared to my 2001 and 2003 Lightnings. Needless to say I am very happy with my Fountain. Retail price of my boat is around 500K anyone want to guess what a 38 TG equipped with Sterling power and dry sump #6 drives will cost.
BTW, Downtown 42, beautiful boat, you dealt with two of the best Fountain dealers in the country, I hope you enjoy your 42 Lightning.

Very true, but remember, the 42 Executioner may have the latest bottom from Fountain, but it is designed and priced to compete against Donzi and Baja, it will not have the amenities of a 42 Lightning or the 39 TG for that matter. Both the 42 Lightning and the 39 TG will be decked out with amenities and rigging and thus the price difference. It really gets down to the simple question, do you spend an additional 100 to 150K for paint and rigging or do you keep your money in your pocket and enjoy a 42 Fountain Executioner.
