wtf-i have to pay michigan sales tax?
someone please help me here.
i recently signed a purchase agreement to buy a used boat from a broker in michigan. the agreement DID state that i had to pay michigan sales tax of 6% unless i can provide documents that would void me paying michigan. i figured since im going to register it in missouri where i live i would either pay missouri's in liew of sales tax if i document or missouri sales tax.
broker says no , i have to pay michigan sales tax unless i have the boat trucked out of state?
does this sound right to you guys?
how can i get around this?
can i hire a transport company to move it across the state line then turn it over to me for a few hundred bucks?
i didnt have to pay oklohoma sales tax when i bought my last boat from there. whats up with michigan?
help

You just have to pay Mo the 500 or so. You don't have to pay them.

Live in Pa, bought boat in CT,
Paid PA sales tax
goes to the state you register boat in and get the title from
the title from Mi, gets transferred to Mo, so Mo gets the tax
Teach that salesman the basic principles of selling items that can be transported
Cars are the same way
Now he CAN (most likely) take the same % that Mo tax is and pay the Mo tax for you but from what I see, I would not trust that worth a ****.
good luck bro

I bought my 97' new from my dealer
ouit of state, didnt pay their sales tax,
I bought my 99' new from the same dealer,
they issued me a check, made out to
my state, for the sales tax.
I would think, that since your
not a Michigan resident, you shouldn't
have to pay their tax.
In our business, we sell stuff out of state,
and we code it as: "out of state, no tax"

Yup, if you don't live or register the boat in that state you don't have to pay tax there. But even if you do, it is transferable (it will show on the sales agreement) to the state the boat is registered in. Most likely it's the lender that is required to collect the tax to close the loan and that might be the case if you are financing it with them. If so they will give you everything you need for MO. In any regard the "dealer" doesn't have to collect for an out of state sale unless MI has some funky law in that regard. If your plan is to document the boat that does not absolve you of the state tax liability.

Technically, the boat has to be delivered across the state line by an agent of the seller. But he can hire you to take it across the state line . Michigan has no claim on any tax from you, your state does. I don't think he's trying to stiff you, just trying to cover himself and doesn't really need to.We sell boats all over and Alabama has no claim to Alabama sales tax unless the boat is registered in Alabama.

I think the sales people are trying to get a little jingle in their pocket
Purchased a boat in FL..........brought it back to PA and had to show a bill of sale to pay the PA tax on the boat before I could even register it in PA

I bought a boat in Michigan in 2001. They did tell me that they have to drive the boat across the state line. But he worked with me and we just agreed that the boat was delivered across the line. Then I paid the taxes in New York,8.25% when I registered the boat. Gotta love NY taxes
