it was originally built with a center pod, when i say center pod i mean a small pod that basically protects the trim ram on the center engine from being in the open tunnel. when the new 280 ros short shafts were installed then it was no longer necessary because the ros has a very short ram that does not protrude down into the tunnel.
I had short shaft 2.5 triples on my spectre cat and was advised to have the center pod to reduce the beating that the inner engine gets from the wash.
I you are running triple or quad set up on a cat it is considered a necessity to have a tunnel pod there to deflect the wash from the tunnel and save wear and tear

your thinking is correct, however the trim ram is the lowest protruding piece of the clamp bracket with the zinc removed, it physically would hang in the tunnel area thus being attacked by lots of water. so with the short ram and a plate across the base of the clamp bracket, it no longer serves a purpose. the pod is really only 5" deep at the deepest position any how. the center engine rides 2.5 inches higher than the outers so the water is attacking it in the gearcase area only. i suppose that maybe before it planes off there is water surrounding that area but once its rolling it no longer matters.
