1987 Sonic 30 SS
I've got the same boat only an '87
I did have trouble with one of the motors, could never get it to run right. I've spoken to many people and it seems like if they run well then leave them alone. My experience has taught me if they start acting up, put an intake, carb, and ignition on them, save yourself the headaches. The electronic parts are all gone.
Don't believe all the doom and gloom about the Alpha SS drives. I've only managed to break off a couple of teeth off a gear in 8 years of running them. I rebuilt them with the Merc HD gear set, run synth oil (change @ 10 hr), and a drive shower. Watch the holeshot starts and pull back on the sticks when flying the boat and you will be fine. The props I use are labbed Mirage 21p, dropped to 20.2 and cupped, it was a completely different boat after that.
Congrats and enjoy it's a great boat.
Let me know if I can help with any more questions

Top out at 63-65 with the props cut down and cupped.
You may see a few more MPH with the stock 21s but full of fuel and gear for a weekend, it will be a bear to get on plane.
I don't think you could turn a 23 to full rpm.
