Cleats

Does anyone have pop up cleats on your Sonic? The factory won't install them, I was wondering why. I have always thought is silly to have a fantastic walk around and then stick cleatts in the middle of it for me to hurt myself on ! What do the flush style cleats look like?
Too Old- any pics of your new cleats?

Pop-up cleats can leak. You have to install a molded rubber boot under it, and run a drain tube to your bilge, or out a fitting on the side of the hull. I do not believe Jay wants to muck up his boats by doing this. I have only 4 cleats on my 26 Sonic. Sometimes, I wish I had a mid-ship cleat, but I am glad I do not, as I am sure I would have busted up some toes due to having them. I make do only with bow and stern cleats, and when push comes to shove, I use the rail on the top of the gunwale to tie off with.

Accon has a new flush mount pull up cleat. It looks very much like the pop ups but has an area moulded into the cleat that allows you to grap t and pull it up. The nice thing about it is the drain and cup is part of the cleat, so there is nothing to add on. If you are in fresh water you can just put a plug in the drain fitting. If you need to drain them just run a line from the drain.
I just installed four of them on my Velocity. These are much better then the plstic cups on the pop ups. I also like the pull ups because there is one less thing to go wrong.

They have a web site, www.aconmarine.com

Too Old how did those cleats mount? did you need to cut a large hole for the pocket to fit???I love the way they look!!!and the cleats from the factory are a toe killer...

Too Old they sure look great and the flush mounting would be great but they are a little pricey!!!!how did you get at the backs ? take out the corner pieces of the head liner?is it a *****????I want to powder coat my rails this winter maybe then would be a good time to replace the cleats....I was going to have the cleats coated also.....

I think the only place that pop-ups are really beneficial are at mid-ship so that you don’t have big cleats sticking out the side. Not an issue with Sonics since they have the walkway on the side where cleats can be mounted without having them stick out the side. I think Sonics look fine with non-pop-ups. My boat would look goofy with non-pop-ups sticking out the side at mid-ship.
