Ok. I got off my lazy arse and did the research... Here's the difference in Performance classes:
DESIGINATION SPEED NUMBER
Performance Extreme-Cat* 110+ MPH PX-#
Performance Extreme-Vee* 110+ MPH PV-#
Performance Class 1 100-109 MPH P1-#
Performance Class 2 90-99 MPH P2-#
Performance Class 3 80-89 MPH P3-#
Performance Class 4 70-79 MPH P4-#
Performance Class 5 Below 70 MPH P5-#
The Outlaw Performance Classes shall serve as a series where racers can begin their racing career, work on racing skills, and where a boat can race that does not fit into any other class that APBA Offshore currently offers. Performance classes also give the racers and manufactures with high performance boats and parts a place to compete and an alternative to the Poker Run circuit. There are so many boat configurations that APBA cannot cater to each and every boat by creating a separate class. Naturally there is not one boat that does it all and different water conditions will cater to different boat configurations and boat size.
A boat that competes in the Performance Classes will be assigned a class by APBA Offshore based on the top speed of that boat in perfect water conditions.. If a Performance Class boat is found to be in the wrong class during pre-race inspection, APBA will move the boat into the correct class. Performance Class is not bracket racing.
