Default From Mag to HO

I changed my 496 mag into a HO by replacing cam and Ecm. Increased speed from 65.5 GPS to 71.2 GPS. This is on a 2006 288 midcabin. Condtions were 60 degrees with 1ft. chop. Fresh water with two people on board weighing 475 pounds. Would like to here some numbers from other 288 midcabin owners. I should also say the motor has no other modifications.

are you still running a stock bravo 1, or did you opt for a bravo X in your boat?

I bet you got more than 50 hp gain if you got almost 6 mph gain.

I am running the bravo one. I think your right about more than 50 hp gain. My thought was it would take CMI to get to 70mph with the cam and ECM change. Most posts I've read say 2 to 3 mph gain from Mag to HO. This was a great surprise. Not sure if Headers will do much more. What do you guys think?

mess,

I am interested in doing the same conversion from mag to HO on my 04' 496 mag. Are the only things you need to change for the conversion the ECM and cam out of the HO? or are there any other little parts needed? And finally approximate costs of the parts? I can install myself.

Thank you,

SB30

Hey sb30,
New HO ECM & HO cam were the only changes I made to the motor. Purchased from BAM marine. ECM was around $1380 & cam was $419. I was very happy with the results.

mess,

Thank you very much for the information. 2k for 50hp is not a bad deal so I think i will call BAM marine and do the same.

Thanks again,

SB30

Re: From Mag to HO

30 Outlaw I used a authorized mercuriser dealer for the install. The cost was $1550 for installing the cam,ECM & full hydraulic steering. I could'nt believe it was that cheap. That's the first time I was surprised in a good way when it comes to paying a bill.

mess, how many hrs were on the motor when you installed the ho cam? did you replace the cam bearings also? I have an '04 288 & am considering the mag to ho upgrade or going w/ the Raylar heads, cam & intake. did you check into reman ecu's? they are about half price.
