Shantry puts new boat to the test

Native of Sarasota hoping for victory in the Offshore GP

Most people would find cruising the water at speeds of 70 mph to be extreme enough.

Cory Shantry and his "Extreme Liquid Assets" team found it a little too restricting.

The Sarasota native, who finished second in the P-class of last year's Sarasota Offshore Grand Prix, returns with his new boat, a 30-foot Phantom, to compete in the Super Vee Light category of Sunday's Grand Prix.

The 21st Annual Sarasota Offshore Grand Prix takes powerboat racers around the beach of Lido Key, ripping through the Gulf of Mexico waters.

"I like (the new boat) a lot better," Shantry said. "With the old boat, we could only go so fast."

Shantry has seen his average speed increase from the 70-mph range to the mid-90s. He's also started seeing the winner's circle, too.

Shantry has competed in four Super Boat Interna- tional/American Power Boat Association races with the new craft, winning two of them.

Looking to keep ties with the Sarasota/Bradenton boating community, Shantry decided to stay local when choosing his team members and, more recently, when deciding who to have build his new boat.

The 30-foot Phantom was built by Will Smith of Sarasota and the motor by Inhibition Marine, also of Sarasota.

"There are several great boat builders out there," Shantry said. "I just chose to help the community and stay local."

In addition to the increase in speed, Shantry's new boat features a variety of safety upgrades. The 28-foot Challenger, which the team previously used, had just a seat for Shantry and his throttle-man, Richard Davis.

Davis, also of Sarasota, said those who see the Phantom for the first time will be amazed with its features and sleek design. The opportunity to race in Sarasota means a lot to Davis, he said, and the team doesn't plan to disappoint local enthusiasts.

"We like to see the fans come out," Davis said. "We plan to do very well."

The new Phantom equips both members in a secure capsule, with a five-point safety racing harness and an oxygen tank at their grasp.

Shantry said the safety upgrades allow him to be a little more confident during a race. Much like Davis, he said racing in his own back yard is enough of an incentive to do well.

"It makes you want to win more," Shantry said of racing in Sarasota. "It gets the taste of winning in your mouth."

Shantry and his team hope a good showing will help them gather more local sponsors, including the main sponsor they've been lacking. The two racers use a foundation they created, The ELA (Extreme Liquid Assets) Motorsports Foundation, to gain sponsorship and help those less fortunate. After the team receives money from advertisers, they then donate a portion to a local charity.

Aside from "Extreme Liquid Assets," there are a few other teams from the area local fans could catch a glimpse of Sunday. The Pier57.com Twisted Metal team and the Marine Tech team both feature area members.

One change in this year's race that could affect fans is the shortening of the course.

In order to comply with insurance and medical response requirements, the course was shortened from 10 miles to a 6.39-mile course this year. Fans on Siesta Key will no longer be able to see the race. The best viewing will be from Lido Beach.

An estimated 70 to 80 boats will take part in the race Sunday, which is still considered by many to be the most prestigious of the circuit.

"I would say it's the biggest race of the year," Shantry said. "Sarasota has such a good way of putting it on with all the events."

The deadline to register for all racers is Sunday.
