Fort Lauderdale · There was plenty of excitement on the water Sunday before aircraft filled the skies at the McDonald's Air and Sea Show, as the boats competing in the Super Boat Grand Prix offshore powerboat race finished up a two-day event off Fort Lauderdale Beach.
One of the more impressive performances was turned in by Plantation Boat Mart in the Manufacturer 3 class, as it averaged 80.76 mph to win its four-lap, 19-mile race, finishing more than three minutes ahead of Marine Tech. That gave Plantation Boat Mart a pair of firsts and an overall victory in the class. The Berman Group and Marine Tech each had a second and a third.
Also posting two victories was Yachts in the Super Vee class. The big Fountain finished Sunday's 41-mile race in 28 minutes, 39 seconds to claim an overall title. Joe Boxer Patron 57 was 21 seconds behind to finish second overall with a pair of seconds.
Competition was keen in the Super Boat Stock class. Miccosukee Indian Gaming won Sunday's 30-mile race by nine seconds over Deep V Cats, which had won Saturday's race. Both boats ended up with 475 total points. Spirit of America Racing was third overall with a pair of thirds.
Sunday's closest race was in Manufacturer 5, where Herbott Racing edged Crazy Chicken by two seconds. The order was reversed in Saturday's race, so both boats tied in overall points.
