MARATHON · Powerboat racers Steven David and Ben Robertson lead the Superboat Vee-class after they won the first of two races Saturday that comprise the Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix in the Florida Keys.
David, of Lighthouse Point, and Robertson, of Charleston, S.C., piloted their 42-foot Shogren Performance Marine at an average speed of 90.33 mph over a course that has entrants navigating under both the new and old Seven Mile Bridges.
"Setup is key," David said. "You have one long straightway and four very tight turns. You find a happy medium between going top-end [full speed] and acceleration."
In second is a sister boat by the same name driven by Earl Hall of Washington, N.C., while third is occupied by Lucas Oil owned by Nigel Hook of San Diego.
"We've got the acceleration, but it [the boat] doesn't slow as quickly at the turns, because it has a slippery bottom," said Hook of his 39-foot Skater. "We've got to get the turns synchronized better."
Miccosukee Indian Gaming, driven by Miami racer Darren Schwartz, leads the Superboat Stock class.
The final race, with 28 teams in various classes, is today.
