All or nothing for Hook
Published October 8, 2006
Deerfield Beach· For the Lucas Oil Superboat Racing team, today's Deerfield Beach Super Boat National Championship offshore powerboat race is an all-or-nothing affair.
To have a chance at winning a national championship, Lucas Oil has to win today's race.
"There's no second place in my mind," driver Nigel Hook said.
Yachts Fountain has a 192-point lead over Lucas Oil in the Super Vee class. For Lucas Oil to overcome that deficit and win the Super Vee national title, it would have to finish first and Yachts Fountain would have to finish no higher than sixth, which would be about a 208-point difference.
"Anything can happen in racing, as you know," said Hook, of Del Mar, Calif., who added that he and throttleman Rick Turmel of West Palm Beach are planning on rough seas for the race.
"Our strategy is to go out and push the other boats, especially the Yachts boat. They typically like to run up front. Our goal will be to let them go out front and push them really hard. The more we can get them to fly, the harder they'll come down."
Hook and Turmel, who rigs and maintains their 39-foot Skater at his Rick Turmel's Marine Performance shop in West Palm, tested their boat in rough seas Friday off Palm Beach, experimenting with different propellers and drive heights. They were thrilled with their results.
"The boat is only five months old, so every time we take it out, we find more speed," Hook said. "[Friday] was the best it's ever run in rough water."

Miccosukee Indian Gaming won a thrilling race to claim a national championship in the Superboat Stock class and Yachts Fountain showed why it was deserving of the Super Vee national title at the Deerfield Beach Super Boat National Championship offshore powerboat race.
National championships go to the boat with the most total points for the season. Going into Sunday's races, the champions already had been determined in all of the classes except Superboat Stock, where Miccosukee Indian Gaming had a 20-point lead over Deep V Cats. That meant that whichever boat finished ahead of the other would win the national crown.
The outcome was in doubt for the entire 12-lap race on the 5.5-mile course, as Miccosukee Indian Gaming finished one second ahead of Deep V Cats.
"It was a nail-biter the whole race," said Miccosukee Indian Gaming throttleman Troy Hannon of Davie, who won his first national title in his 10th year of racing. It was also the first title for driver Daren Schwartz of North Miami, who is in his first full year of racing.
Sunny skies and a whisper of a breeze had the beach crowded with spectators, while others watched from the dozens of boats that lined the east side of the barely rippling race course.
Deep V Cats led the first two laps, as Miccosukee Indian Gaming got stuck between two boats at the start. Midway through the third lap, Miccosukee Indian Gaming, a 32-foot Doug Wright design that raced last year as The Hulk, took the lead and stayed in front the rest of the race, although it never led by more than five seconds.
"As we burn fuel, the boat gets lighter and the propellers turn faster," Hannon explained. "Towards the end, we were running 104 mph and our props were doing 8,500 rpm, which is as fast as they can turn, so we couldn't go any faster."
Yachts Fountain went into its race with a 192-point lead over Lucas Oil in Super Vee, which needed to win and have Yachts Fountain finish sixth to claim the national title.
When only one other boat showed up for the race, Yachts Fountain simply needed to cross the starting line to win the third Super Vee national title for driver Michel Karsenti of Fort Lauderdale and throttleman Serge Allegre of Cannes, France.
Yachts Fountain started and kept going, building a big lead over Joe Boxer Patron 57 and Lucas Oil. When Joe Boxer dropped out on the eighth lap and Lucas Oil stopped racing on the ninth lap, Yachts Fountain completed the 12-lap race by itself.
"We had good acceleration," Karsenti said, "which was more important than top-end speed because the course was so short."
