And what would the outcome to offshore racing be if something happened, and hurting spectators?

Stoopid if you ask me.

I believe a car going by you at 200 mph is just as danderous. Not much between you and the car. I believe a boat doing a "fly by" is not the safest thing, but it is entertaining. Alot of things at a boat race aren't the safest things. ( Helicopters flying 100 feet over your head). But we all love boat racing and stuff that borders stupid is part of it.

Makes for a great picture but not cool with people right there.. Let just say there was something in the water, and the Starboard side hit something big enough floating next to the pier (Usually debris accumulates along the pier) and took out a prop or a hydraulic steering line and hooked the boat into the pier. I'm sure that would give a good rep to offshore racing. I agree with Waybomb fully. As for a car going past at 200, there is at least a fence and they are still at least 20 feet from the fence. Also it is a controlled environment. When do you see crap on the side of the track or waves? Also how often out of all the helicopter flights do you hear of them going down? Not very often. All I am trying to say is that I don't think that was the right thing to do.. It would be a cool if spectators were not involved.

All I can say is "Holy ****!" If I didn't know that this was a real shot, I would have thought it was photoshopped

2006: 1st year of the event, several teams including myself buzzed the seawall which forced the fans to get off the bleachers and move them forward to the edge in order to see us.
2007:2nd year of the event, spectator markers were installed approx 20 yards off of seawall and explecite(sp) instructions in the drivers meeting not to buzz the seawall due to safety concerns, not only for the boats but more importantly for the fans. If you went outside(close to the wall) of the markers, you would not be scored any further, it would be construed as leaving the course. Fines and penalties would be assessed if these rules were broken.

Obviously I dont know if markers were installed this year or what has transpired since with insurance issues, but I am sure especially with there being photographic proof, it will be reviewed and dealt with accordingly.

Now personally since I have had the privledge of racing the incredible race site of Morehead City and I was one of the teams buzzing the seawall back in the first year, yes as cool as it is and as cool as that picture is, sometimes we have to ask ourselves "What if?" "What if" a fan had a little too much to drink and got up on the edge and lost their balance? "What if" John relaxed for just one split second and a wave knudged him into the wall? So many "What if's" you get my point. Accidents happen, unfortunately just a fact of life.

As I said above, SBI officials will review and act accordingly and it will be handled in a private manner, not here on the boards, so thankfully nothing did happen, the fans got an incredible display of driving(no matter the speed) and a real closeup of what we love to do. Whats done is done and we can only move forward. SBI's safety record speaks for itself.

They did a drive by for the fans nothing more nothing less, they were in control and ran by at a speed they felt was safe and they could control the boat. They set up for it on their last lap and through a tail for the fans.
There will be no review, there werent any markers this yr, they were on the race course, putting on a show. Its all about the fans guys .....
