The one in the first picture is a 7.4GSI (454Mag).

Yes, Shawn does sell the newer 8.1L (496) engines also. They are $6500 and up though. Here is a shot of the VP 8.1L...

That is for sure.
And the 420HP version can be had for like $7500.

Merc takeouts go for $9500 up.
New the Mercs are $12,500+.

Personally I like the way Volvo Penta accessorizes their engines better than Merc. The Merc 502MagMPI in my boat now has all the accessories from my VP 7.4Gi. Makes for a much cleaner package...

Those Volvo's sound like a great deal. If you can get a 496HO for 12,500, you are getting a deal. I paid more than that 1.5 yrs. ago.

Add a Raylar kit and some good exhaust to one of these and for the price Merc gets for a 496HO you can have a 525HP.

Wink Re: Nice Power for a 24' Super

Yep:

We have a few customers who have used the Volvo 8.1L GI and GXI and with our 103 kit and headers and a little MEFI ECM tweaking they are making about 570HP with headers and pulling 5400 rpms to the new rev limit setting. Looking at a $6500 motor, $6100 Raylar kit a set of good headers at$4000, ECM reprogram at $800 youve got 560-570HP set up for about $17,500!! Check those prices against Merc or just about anyone for a complete turn key package! Can you say economical? Pretty difficult in today's pricey engine market!
