The only thing I can think of is that the lifters dropped down too far into the block. Either the cam has too small of a base circle or the lifters are the wrong match for the cam.
A Gen V Block does have the shorter lifter boss and requires "retrofit" roller lifters.

How would you install the push rods?
The cam would surely get eaten up too...

Thanks Pat, I found it in a Junk File, Picked up engine last night, replace with Isky lifters $600+ although I don't think it was a problem with the lifters, Hope to get it back in the boat sometime today.
