Default playin' hooky!

I'm gonna take my birthday off work on thursday (april 22nd) and spend the day on the water.

I'm in NYC and have only been in the hudson river-- I boat for my commute during the summer but now that I have a larger boat I'd like to explore further from home base.

Anyone wanna come out for the day and give me a tour of the surrounding waterways? (anything south or east of NYC)

Let me know! I've got a Y2K that wants to wander!

I'd love to blow off the day, but can't get out.
You can run the East River to Louie's for lunch in Port Wash.
Or you can run the ocean along the rockaways to the 1st inlet, East Rockaway(Debs) Inlet. Cruise Reynolds Channel, under the LIRR train tressel, and under the Long Beach Bridge to Paddy McGee's.
Either of those 2 would be a good 1st days Excursion.
If you want, you can call me to give you some nav details.

Port Wash is a nice harbor to anchor in... not terribly crowded this time of year.
There is also steamboat landing in Glen Cove.
There's a nice anchorage near Huntington, but thats further east, and i've never been.

There is a cove in Lawrence, where the yacht club is that is easily accesable.
Or there is short beach towards jones beach, but i've never been.

Let me know which way you go... there are some tricky spots either way where you can get in trouble...

I think east river and then anchor someplace east of there... maybe stop by city island.

I've got a garmin chartplotter and have experience navigating in the Caribbean. I also have a cruising guide to long island.

What are the tricky spots?

Thanks for the help!

Ooops... sorry i haven't checked in.
I'm guessing you are out, and enjoying a beautiful day.
Happy Bday, btw!

Now that i know you are a navigator also, the only area i'd be watching is coming by stepping stone lighthouse, gotta pass it on the north side(City Isl side). MANY a rocks on the LI side.

So what did you ended up doing?

It was fantastic! A great way to celebrate my birthday! Went with two friends got started around 1pm.

We cruised north from Piermont, NY on the hudson stopping at West Point and Storm King. Sun showers and gusty winds.

The Y2K was fast and nimble on the river in some medium chop. I found myself playing with the port tab frequently depending on wind. Wind was definitely an issue, gusting above 25mph.

We then headed back down and anchored off the cliffs near Alpine, NJ and hung out for an hour or so. New aluminum Fortress anchor held fast on the first throw in 12' with a mud bottom.

Around 5pm we headed back to NYC and chelsea piers. All in we burned 35 gallons of fuel and it was a blast!

Definitely need to improve the wind screens and need to remove some play from the steering.

Had a nice commute back to Piermont this morning, 41 minutes and 10 gallons, 26 mi.
