Rick,
I talked to John, he really did'nt want to committ to any kind of completion date for some reason. The only thing he said was it would be sooner than expected. What's your opinion?

Re: My next boat: Y2k!
Pat,
I ordered the boat with the 496 mag and Xr drive just to get it ordered. I'm having a hard time deciding which way to go. I have some $ on top of this package to play with for motor upgrades as we speak, but not 25g's as most builders are charging for motors.(wife issues) I have the capability myself to build an engine, however I'm not sure what all I would need for a true drop in engine for JC to install.
I may do a cam change and Whipple the 496, but I would prefer a 502 or 540 for the availabilty of perf. parts and reliability.
I would welcome any help from anyone in your neck of the woods...
Thanks Tom

Hi Tom,
It is much more cost effective to buy an engine drive package from Mercruiser. Buying the drive, gimble, trim pump, and... as separate parts will cost a lot more. But as you said there are not that many upgrade options for the new 496 as of yet. A Whipple system may be the best way to achieve your goal with a 496. Will it require internal mods as well as the supercharger though??? It's too bad Merc. doesn't offer a carburetted 502 or 540 any longer; those new 525EFI's are too much $$. It would be a much easier upgrade the 502 to the 650+HP you want to have in the end.
JC normally installs high powered engines from MRD, but I know you don't want a custom engine from a builder 3000 miles away.
Having her rigged with the 496HO from the start is likely your best option. You will take delivery of your boat ready to rumble. You can run her for a while. Then sell off the 496 and replace it with a 540 or upgrade the 496...
