Trailer surge brake question/problem.
I have a 22' Aluminum Rocket trailer with surge brakes. When hitting the brakes in the truck, the surge brakes on the trailer engage it seems without problem. Looking at the rotors, everything seems to be fine. After braking, and hitting the gas to take off again, the brakes are either hanging up, or there is something out of adjustment (I think?) because there is a clunking noise/popping noise where it seems like something hangs up for 1-2 seconds, then releases and everything is normal.
Is this the way surge brakes work? Or is there something wrong? Is there an adjustment I need to make, or can one be made?
Any help would be appreciated.

If the trailer has drum brakes you must keep them adjusted. The farther out of adjustment the shoes are the more wham you will have when stopping and starting. It is amazing how a little brake adjustment will affect the "wham". When the system is adjusted and there is no air trapped in the hydraulic lines you should have little or no wham. There also is a shock absorber in the coupler to cushion this but it sounds like your trailer is too new to consider this as a problem. Good Luck

Sadly, the trailer has disc brakes, and they look to be fine- no burnin or blue marks on the rotors anywhere.
I am beginning to think its somewhere in the surge/cylinder setup somewhere.

My disc setup has the same play as you describe. There is a little travel before the brakes are activated. I assumed to keep the brakes from engaging every slight movement. Possibly that is what you are experiencing.

Are you sure it's not the hinge on the trailer just coming down and making the noise?Mine would swivel and make the loudest noise but it was just the swivel movement...how do you know it's hanging up? Does it actually drag the rear of the tow vehicle down in the back when you release the brake?Mine was worse(sounding)when towing with a suv...very loud!

Re: Trailer surge brake question/problem.
If they are disc brake check the fluid and bleed the system. Any air will cause bad stuff. Is yours equipped with a backup lockout check valve? If so it must be wired through the plug to the backup lights on your truck.
