Re: Fuel Filters on a Power Stroke Diesel
I have changed mine twice this year (bought the truck in december) in about 18,000 miles. I do because I pump diesel out of my aux tank in the back of the truck, and I cant be 100% sure its totally clean. It makes it easier to change being on the top of the engine and only requiring a 1/2 in drive to get it out.

Open it, replace the element, close it up.. If it's a 6.0 there is also a filter on the frame rail. For that one fo to IH and get the new style drain plug.. MUCH easier to open up, and it doesnt fall out when you loosen it up..
Every other oil change BTW.. Work truck, filters are cheaper than a dead truck

It all depends where you get your fuel....lots of spots do not take care of there fuel...I pump my own and have filters on tanks...I still change them at like 12 to 18 g.....or sometimes if truck gets slower then this means your time is up....if you have a fuel problem starting up in morning...change it...if it fires ok....and motor goes up and down fast...or dies out ...after fire....change it..you can not do 30 g on a filter...pleeeeze....I hardly get to 20....bad.....hard on injector pump!!!!!!!!...make sure you fill the filter with fuel prior to putting it on....let it idle when fireing...no reving up...let return work to remove air....this was for 6.9 and 7.3

on the 7.3 it is SUPER easy to change the filter. There is a "cover" over it that is only there for looks (I took mine off and left it off). Then there is a small coffee can looking canister on the top of the engine. It has a 1/2" drive on it. Put ratchet on it and loosen it up. Install the new one in reverse order. DONE. Its that simple.
